In Holland during the 17th century, a flower became a prized possession and a symbol of ultimate refinement. The tulip quickly acquired unprecedented value as "tulipomania" spread throughout the country. Soon it became a sign of bad taste to be without tulips in one's home.
Before long, most people in Holland began trading in tulips. At one point, a single bulb was traded for land. Tulips appeared on stock exchanges as they were openly traded in the financial market. Predictably, many speculators made vast sums of money and everyone from workers to the well-off tried their luck with the flowers.
As can also be predicted, the trend cooled and prices dropped. The flowers became flowers again, and the markets returned to trading as usual. The scandalous rise in value and the frenzied flower trading left many people financially battered. Yet throughout the mania, there surely were those who saw the value of the blossoms for what they were and not as the currency of the day.
We still hear about currency on a daily basis, most notably from those who are adept at following those trends. There is a new "currency", however, that is emerging, and that is one of a more personal nature. This new currency not only applies to individuals, but also to social groups, companies and industries.
For those involved in social networking, for example, "staying connected" might be their currency. For a chef, the currency might be the creation of culinary masterpieces for fame and fortune. An individual artist's currency might be the ability to express an idea or a concept in a particular medium.
The value in identifying one's currency is that it serves as a guidepost in many areas of our lives. And while this might seem like a purely esoteric concept, it can be used in all areas from health and wellness to entertainment and hobbies.
